Natashia Holmes, a onetime Illinois Department of Transportation
employee and one of dozens of candidates, has been chosen by Mayor Rahm
Emanuel as the new 7th Ward alderman.
As Emanuel's first aldermanic appointment, Holmes is replacing former Ald. Sandi Jackson, who last month resigned
from the seat she held since 2007.

late November after a lengthy medical leave and federal
investigation of his campaign finances. The investigation also prompted questions
about Sandi Jackson’s finances.
fill the aldermanic seat, Emanuel received a list of three finalists
from a commission that examined and interviewed candidates. Candidates
for the seat could be nominated online by anyone.
by the Sun-Times why he insisted on entertaining the suggestions of all Chicagoans, Emanuel said,
“If I just picked somebody, it’s the mayor just deciding you’re gonna
have this loyal person…Somebody would say there is not community
involvement. And I actually think the community should have an
involvement, given that you don’t really have an election. There’s
really no perfect plan. I put forward something I think will stand the
test of time that will make sense of getting community input as you make
a selection without an election because you can’t at this time.”
