U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says the city of Chicago should repay the federal government if Midway International Airport is privatized.
Durbin sent a letter to Secretary of Treasury Ray LaHood asking that he look closely at any plans to sell or lease the airport. The lawmaker also says the city should be made to repay the federal government the $378 million it paid out to update the aiport. The money was spent on building a new terminal and redoing taxiways and runways.
The senator pointed out that the federal government borrowed a great deal of money to help rehab some of the nation's airports and, as such, should be repaid for any plans to sell or lease the properties. He also says taxpayers should be given the opportunity to chime in on the potential deals.
