The Illinois House has failed to take up an override vote on Gov. Pat Quinn's budget cuts to state facilities during the veto session, thereby keeping his prison and facility closure stand in place. House Speaker Michael Madigan said he did not think a vote was needed on the issue. Quinn voiced his pleasure with the House decision not to override his planned cuts. AFSCME, which represents state employees that work at the facilities, has been fighting to keep the facilities open despite the governor's plans.
Last week, the Senate voted to override the $56 million in cuts that would lead to the closing of Tamms Supermax prison, Dwight women's prison, two youth facilities and three halfway houses.
