Two months after Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) made national headlines for trying to block a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his Northwest Side ward, Moreno quietly backed down yesterday, stating that he will no longer block the establishment. The alderman opposed Chick-fil-A because of company President Dan Cathy's opposition to gay marriage and donations to anti-gay marriage groups. According to the Chicago Tribune, Moreno says he scored a "big win" because the restaurant's non-profit entity will no longer donate to such groups.
However, the company made a similar pledge back in July. Moreno's initial opposition drew attention to the growing fast food joint's gay marriage views, but it is unclear what, if any concessions, will be made from Chick-fil-A.
