Gov. Pat Quinn has until Tuesday to sign, veto or partially veto a major expansion of state gambling and it appears the governor will wait until next week to issue a decision. Quinn said the bill was a "complicated measure" that is "thick as a Chicago phonebook" and requires some line-by-line weekend reading.
This does not entirely jibe with previous remarks. While Quinn never explicitly vowed to veto the bill, he has provided every indication of a veto, stating the bill lacks ethical safeguards. State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), the bill sponsor, told Progress Illinois last month that a Quinn veto was a sure thing. Lang said that he was focusing his efforts on a veto override. Stay tuned.
