According to a press statement from AFSCME Council 31, the state has extended their halt of inmate transfers relating to corrections and juvenile justice facility closings ordered by Gov. Pat Quinn. The postponement of inmate transfers will now go until August 31, which coincides with the state's scheduled closing date of the Tamms supermax prison and Dwight women's prison.
AFSCME sued Quinn over the facility closures contending that they will lead more to prison overcrowding and compromise the safety of corrections workers. A state circuit court judge has not decided on the overall issue of whether to block the facility closings.
