South Side State Representative Resigns After Investigation

State Rep. Connie Howard (D-Chicago) sent a letter of resignation to Speaker of the House Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) on July 6 that announced her departure from the Illinois House effective July 9. The state previously discovered that Howard's AIDS awareness group, the Let's Talk, Let's Test Foundation, did not keep satisfactory financial records after two state agencies handed out $1.7 million in total grants to Let's Talk, Let's Test. State Attorney General Lisa Madigan unsuccessfully tried to recover the grant money.

Last week, seven people were arrested in a federal investigation also over the improper use of state health grants, with three being campaign workers of former State Sen. Rickey Hendon (D-Chicago).

Howard previously said that she would finish out her current term. Democratic nominee Elgie Sims is expected to take over the South Side seat.
