The scheduled closing of Dwight women's prison August 31 means a shifting of the state's inmate population that the Illinois Department of Corrections hasn't entirely figured out yet. The 980 women inmates at Dwight are supposed to transfer to Logan Correctional Center in the town of Lincoln. Logan Correctional Center currently holds 2,000 male inmates, all of which will be transferred out of the facility. Meanwhile, the 1,000 women inmates at Lincoln Correctional Center, a facility that is also in Lincoln, will be shuttled to the Logan Correctional Center. The Logan Correctional center will become an all female prison that houses about 1,980 women inmates.
What happens then to the 2,000 male inmates currently at Logan? About 1,000 of them will fill up the Lincoln Correctional Center, which is set to lose its current female inmate population. What happens to the other 1,000 male inmates is unclear. The State Journal-Register reports that some female and male inmates could be released from prison and monitored electronically.
