The U.S. Senate's current version of the farm bill cuts money for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, by $4 billion over the next decade. The cut is fairly modest: the federal government currently spends $78 billion a year on the program. But it would deduct $90 a month in aid from 500,000 households, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate.
SNAP use skyrocketed during the recession — spending on the program is 300 percent greater than it was in 2007, and 1 in 7 Americans currently get SNAP aid.
