Chicago Police Department head Garry McCarthy looks to be taking advantage of a city ordinance that lets the department deputize and bring in outside police forces for the NATO summit, held May 20-21st. Chicago City Hall sources told the Sun-Times that 500 troopers from the Illinois State Police, or about 40 percent the state police's total force, would be sent to Chicago to handle summit protesters. Also, police from the northwest Chicago suburb of Rosemont will help patrol O'Hare International Airport during the arrival of dignitaries and diplomats.
It was reported last week that up to 600 Illinois National Guard members will also be in Chicago for the summit.
