Peoria-based Caterpillar Inc. announced 80 new jobs for a non-union Sumter, South Carolina factory, as it moves production of hydraulic cylinders from a plant in Joilet. However, the company said the union-represented Joilet plant will expand its strut productions, and no jobs will be lost at the Illinois site.
Caterpillar CEO Douglas Oberhelman has been a vocal critic of Illinois' business climate after its corporate tax increase in January 2011. Caterpillar announced last month that the company would build a new factory in North Carolina, not its native Illinois.
