The corporate parent of Midwest Generation told investors this week that Midwest Generation might follow the closing of the Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants in Chicago by shutting down its remaining Illinois coal plants. These include plants in Waukegan, Romeoville, Joilet, and Powerton. The plants pollute the air and lose California-based Edison International money thanks to low power prices. Some 1,050 jobs could be lost in the closings. The decision on whether to shutter the plants will be made this summer.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Midwest Generation announced Wednesday that the Fisk plant in the Pilsen neighborhood will shut down by December 2012 and the lights will go off at Crawford in Little Village by December 2014.
