Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, House Speaker Mike Madigan, and House Republican leader Tom Cross are among the elected officials who used a special admissions track to get applicants into the University of Illinois. The Chicago Tribune reported yesterday on a Category I admissions track that U of I abandoned in 2009. The track enabled "connected applicants" to appeal if they were not admitted to the school: These applicants were often the relatives of campaign donors or Springfield lobbyists.
About 60 politicians made requests in 2008 and 2009 alone, including 43 requests from Madgan, a Chicago Democrat.
