Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office announced that the city will challenge the 2010 U.S. Census count, which showed Chicago to have lost about 181,000 black residents and 53,000 white residents. The Chicago Tribune reports that a successful challenge will result in $1,200 in federal funding for each person added to the city's 2,695,558 population total. Mayor Richard Daley was unsuccessful in challenging the 2000 U.S. Census results.
The challenge comes after the City Council remapped the city's 50 wards based on 2010 U.S. Census figures. It also comes after Illinois' state and Congressional districts changed to reflect the 2010 census.
