The Illinois Tollway Board has approved an 87 percent toll increase to pay for a $12 billion project to rebuild the state's highways. The increase means tolls for I-Pass users will jump from ranging between 15 cents to $1 to the new rates of between 30 cents to $1.90. Toll rates will be twice that of the new costs for I-Pass users for drivers who use cash.
The 15-year capital plan will lead to a widening and expansion of the state's entire 286-mile highway system.
