Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios continues his trend of keeping the county's business all in the family by giving his daughter a promotion and $10,000 raise. He promoted her to chief industrial appraiser from an analyst position, bumping her salary from $58,344 to $68,288. He says the move is actually saving the county money because she has taken over some of the duties left vacant by the retirement of the former manager of industrial and commercial valuations, whose post has remained empty. Berrios says he would have to pay an employee $100,000 if he rehired for the position.
The assessor has also hired two other family members to work in the office. His son, Joseph "Joey" Berrios, has been hired as a residential analyst, which comes with a $48,000 salary. Berrios Sr.'s sister Carmen is now the director of taxpayer services, earning an annual salary of $86,000. This is the second time Berrios has hired the pair to work for county government. He also brought them on board when he was commissioner of the county's Board of Review, which oversees tax appeals.
