Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey owes more than $24,000 in property taxes, even though it's his job to help determine how much county residents should pay for the tax. Fritchey, who makes $85,000 as a county commissioner, blamed his wife's divorce attorney for the lack of payment on the taxes as well as the fact that the couple defaulted on their Lincoln Park home mortgage.
"My wife acted upon advice from her attorney and ceased payment on the property taxes as well as the mortgage," Fritchey told the Sun-Times. "While I questioned the advice from her lawyer, I have no choice but to accept the decisions she made. Divorce brings a number of hardships. These are among them."
Fritchey says the tax bills will be paid as soon as the sale of their home, which is currently under contract, is complete.
