The Chicago Public School system is calling for an $80 million property tax increase as an effort to plug an $820 million budget gap and avert the elimination of 2,000 teachers. Cutting that number of teachers would result in much larger class sizes of 36 students per class; the current contract with the Chicago Teachers Unions allows a maximum class size of 29 grade school students, and 28 high schoolers. The proposal reportedly has the support of interim chief Terry Mazany.
