The Illinois House passed a bill (HB 1447) by a vote of 87-3 that would reduce the pension benefits for future lawmakers and judges, making their benefits the same as teachers and other state employees.
Current benefit plans for lawmakers and judges increase by either 3 percent each year or equal to the increase in the consumer price index (CPI), whichever is less; teachers' and other workers' either increase by 3 percent or half of the CPI, whichever is less. The legislation would impact judges and lawmakers hired after January 1, 2011.
