The State Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill this morning that will make cuts to pensions for future police officers and firefighters. The bill (SB 3538), which passed the House earlier in the week, would extend the retirement age by five years and cap benefits for all officers and firefighters hired after Jan. 1, 2011. The passage comes over the objection of Chicago officials who complained the changes will force the city to pay more into the pension fund during a budget crisis.
