Rep. Judy Biggert, who represents Illinois' 13th Congressional District, is one of 30 Republicans to sign a petition to hold a vote in Congress on repealing the Democrats' health care reform bill. In doing so, she joined some of the U.S. House's most extreme right-wing members -- such as Reps. Steve King (R-IA) and Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) -- in opposing health care reform. The signatories were announced yesterday by the Heritage Foundation's advocacy arm, which describes itself as leading a "nationwide campaign to work toward a vote in the House on full repeal."
Biggert has received over $370,000 in campaign contributions from the health insurance industry during her tenure in Congress, according to Democrat Scott Harper's campaign.
Here is Harper's response to Biggert's signing of the petition:
"Repealing this bill means that a child with asthma or autism can and will be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition, a woman diagnosed with breast cancer will have to worry that her health insurance company will drop her over a technicality, and a college student looking for their first job will not be able to remain on their parent's health insurance policy. There are tens of thousands of people in our district waiting for a change from the status quo, and while the bill that passed might not have been perfect, I'd rather fight to change the provisions I dislike than turning my back on people who need help the most."
