GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady's lead appears to have shrunk considerably in the gubernatorial race, according to the latest survey from Public Policy Polling. Due a decline in support among Republican respondents, Brady now leads Quinn 34 to 30 percent, with Green Party candidate Rich Whitney grabbing nine percent of the vote. Below are the toplines, with the results of an April PPP poll (which did not include Whitney) in parentheses:
Brady: 34% (44%)
Quinn: 30% (33%)
Support for Quinn obviously dipped as well in the new survey, but not nearly as far as the Republican candidate. The biggest challenge for Quinn is to find a way to excite his party's base; currently, a dismal 51 percent of Democratic respondents say they will vote for him in November.
Here is PPP's conclusion:
Brady is still favored here but he is not strong enough on his own merits as a candidate for this race to turn into a blowout. It should be competitive into the fall.
Quinn's overall approval rating is 27 percent in the latest poll, as compared to 25 percent in the April survey.
