The Chicago City Council passed an ordinance that would give an internal investigator -- chosen by council members -- the authority to investigate corruption in the chamber. Approved by a 28-17 vote, the Office of Legislative Inspector General could only launch a probe after an accuser signs a sworn complaint and the watchdog is granted permission to proceed by the Chicago Board of Ethics. Critics like Ald. Joe Moore (49th Ward) blasted the proposal as nothing more than "a paper tiger." Mayor Richard Daley had previously sought to give the oversight role to his Office of Inspector General, but his office has no objections to this bill.
