The Illinois House unanimously approved a rewrite of the state's telecommunications act yesterday. The bill will prevent regulations on broadband and Internet-based phone providers and loosen existing regulations on landline providers. The measure also includes changes to the service quality standards that providers must meet. Consumer groups are pushing for a guarantee that the companies will maintain a certain level of broadband development in more rural parts of the state. (You can learn more about the issue here.)
UPDATE (2:18 p..m.): The Senate unanimously passed the bill as well. It now heads to the governor's desk.
