Chicago Ald. Joe Moore (49th Ward) and three of his city council colleagues introduced
an ordinance today that would regulate the emissions generated by
Midwest Generation, which operates coal-fired power plants in both
the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods. The proposal stipulates that anti-pollution
equipment would have to be installed between 2013 and 2015, four to
five years earlier than currently required by state regulators. On behalf of
Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Justice Department
has already filed suit in federal court against Midwest Generation. Democratic Cook County board president nominee Toni Preckwinkle is one of the four co-sponsors.
