Chicago City Council members are angry that the Daley administration is calling for more ethics oversight without acknowledging its own role in the city's corruption. They note that, under Daley's stewardshiot, City Hall has been hit with multiple patronage scandals. Furthermore, Daley himself pushed for the promotion of now-convicted Ald. Isaac Carothers (29th Ward) to the Police and Fire Committee chairmanship. It was Carothers' indictment that purportedly spurred Daley to propose giving the Chicago inspector general the power to investigate aldermen and oversee hiring.
Some aldermen are contemplating a far more aggressive measure that would create their own inspector or auditor general using money saved by abolishing Daley's Office of Compliance.
