Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan filed a constitutional amendment today that would abolish the lieutenant governor's office. If both chambers pass the measure, it will then go before voters in November. If a majority supports the idea, the office would be eliminated in 2015.
UPDATE (8:25 p.m.): Huffington Post Chicago got a response from Gov. Quinn's office:
"Governor Pat Quinn favors keeping the Illinois Office of Lieutenant Governor. Having served as Illinois Lieutenant Governor for nearly six years, Governor Quinn knows the office can serve as a strong voice for everyday people, including veterans, service members and their families."
When asked if the Governor would fight Speaker Madigan's measure, the Governor's office had no comment.
