Many Unknowns, Police Say, For NATO/G8 Summits

Chicago Police Department leadership has pretty broad guesses about what security will be needed for the NATO and G8 summits, how many people will come in to Chicago to attend the summits, and who might be arrested for protesting the summit.

“This is a federal, White House event and we don’t have a lot of information at this time,” said Debra Kirby, the police department’s chief of international relations in response to questions posed by Ald. Ed Burke (14th) at a city council Budget and Government Operations committee hearing today. The NATO and G8 summits will be held at McCormick Place more or less simultaneously, May 19-21.

“Frankly, it leaves a lot of unknown questions at this time,” she added.

Occupy Chicago's Second Attempt At Grant Park Ends In 130 Arrests (VIDEO)

For the second consecutive Saturday, the Occupy Chicago movement flexed its muscles with a 2,000-person march down Jackson Ave. and attempted occupation of Grant Park. More than 100 Chicago police officers surrounded the park warning protesters of the 11 p.m. park curfew and the risk of possible arrest.

By the end of the night at least 130 protesters were handcuffed with zip ties, photographed and escorted to the first district police station at 18th St. & State St. by a city paddy wagon and Cook County Sheriff buses by county correctional guards.

Emanuel’s Budget Bad For Libraries, Public Health – And Even Police
