Advocates Call On Lawmakers To Have A Heart When It Comes To Federal Budget Cuts (VIDEO)

As the deadline looms for Congress to agree on a budget plan that would avoid an automatic series of spending cuts, a coalition of worker rights', veteran and anti-poverty advocates convened at Federal Plaza Thursday to voice their concerns over the potential negative impact such a move would have for the most vulnerable Americans.

More than $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade, known as sequestration, are set to go into effect March 1. According to a report released last September by the White House Office of Management and Budget, reductions would be made across the board, impacting more than 1,200 agencies and programs.

Singing such tunes as “Stop in the Name of Love”, some 40 to 50 protesters stood in the cold to give what organizers described as a “Valentine’s Day message” to both Illinois Democrat U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk to preserve funding for the country’s social safety net.

EPI Blasts ALEC's Economic Recommendations Saying They Are Bad For The Public Good

Researchers on a conference call today questioned the American Legislative Exchange Council's economic and fiscal policy agenda.

Hosted by the Economic Policy Institute, a non-profit think tank that often presents the liberal viewpoint on economic issues, the conference call exposed what some researchers called the “counterproductive policies” of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a state legislator organization that promotes free-market and conservative ideas.

The American Legislative Exchange Council, which is made up of more than 2,000 state legislators, came under fire last year for its promotion of the “Stand Your Ground” gun policy, but today’s conference call centered on state tax and budget policy prescriptions and privatization plans.

Illinois Tops 'Job Blackmail' List For Deals That Cost Taxpayers Money And, Potentially, Jobs

The practice of luring existing companies from one state to another in exchange for big subsidies doesn’t create new jobs, drains states of public-service funds and leaves taxpayers with the tab, a new study from the Washington, D.C.-based Good Jobs First finds.

Interstate job fraud, when companies re-label jobs as “new” in exchange for up to nine-figure state subsidies to relocate, is wasteful and net benefits are microscopic, said Greg LeRoy, executive director of Good Jobs First, during a teleconference with press Thursday.

“Putting lots of eggs in a few corporate baskets reduces funding available for the low-risk, high payoff investments and education and infrastructure that benefit all employers,” said LeRoy, the study’s primary author.
