Anti-Violence Groups Blast Cohen Candidacy (VIDEO)

A broad coalition of anti-violence and women's groups held a press conference in Chicago to discuss the recent revelations about the Democrat lieutenant gubernatorial nominee's history of violence and harassment. Due to their nonprofit status, most of the representatives couldn't publicly demand that Cohen withdraw from the ballot.  Nonetheless, they strongly repudiated his candidacy.

"Scott Lee Cohen Should Step Aside"

Last night on WTTW, Scott Lee Cohen said he had no intention of withdrawing as the Democratic lieutenant governor candidate, but added: "If the people of Illinois decided they don't want me as their lieutenant governor, I would consider [withdrawing from the race] at that point."  It's not clear what would constitute such a decision, but some folks are trying to get their message across on Facebook.  Yesterday, the group "Scott Lee Cohen Should Step Aside" surfaced and has now amassed a few hundred members.  The group's creator is urging them to send the Cohen campaign an individual message "asking him to resign his nomination."

Time To Eliminate The Lite Guv?

Could the Scott Lee Cohen debacle finally push the state of Illinois to eliminate the lieutenant governor's office? Today, editorials boards from across the state are calling for a constitutional amendment to do away what the Daily Herald calls a "do-nothing office."  Meanwhile, Dan Johnson-Weinberger uses the Cohen story to remind us of the "danger of our plurality elections."  He argues that we should avoid such situations by moving to primary runoffs.  (Under such a system, if no candidate receives more than 50 percent at the polls, the top two vote-getters face off in a subsequent runnoff election.)  Finally, the Reader's Whet Moser takes a broader view of the Cohen saga: "The actual possible bright side to this is that it could be the sort of waking-up-covered-in-vomit-in-a-gutter (with vague memories of a 'masseuse') moment the state really needs to get its shit together."

Number Of The Day: $5,350

That's the amount Scott Lee Cohen raised from individual donors in the last six months of 2009.  Meanwhile, he poured $2.3 million of his own cash into the race for lieutenant governor (all while missing alimony payments, apparently), which allowed him to blanket the state with mail and television ads.
