Why Is Daley Complaining About Walmart Coverage?

Mayor Daley has admitted that he no longer reads local news coverage.  Maybe if he broke his boycott and actually looked at the reporting that's been done this year, he'd see that Walmart proponents are well-represented in almost every news report while community-level critics are rarely quoted.

Grossman: Kirk's Claims Weren't "Mistakes," They Were "Exaggerations"

Last week, we  spent some time cataloging the barrage of media criticism GOP Senate nominee Mark Kirk received after making excuses for needlessly mischaracterizing his own military record. The Sun-Times' Kate Grossman gave her two-cents on WTTW's Chicago Tonight last Friday, questioning why Kirk keeps suggesting his embellishments were accidental. "The part that [the Sun-Times editorial board] was disappointed with is that he just calls these mistakes," she said. "These are not mistakes. These are exaggerations." Watch it (full video of the panel discussion is available here):

Alexi Giannoulias' campaign has also been tracking the various pundit reactions on their YouTube channel.

Edit Boards Jump On Kirk's "Hubris"

Yesterday, we criticized U.S. Senate candidate Mark Kirk's desperate attempt to pass off the deepening controversy over the embellishment of his military record as an honest mistake exploited by Alexi Giannoulias. Today, editorial boards across the region piled on the North Shore Republican, as well.

The Sun-Times suggested that voters in Illinois now "have reason to doubt" that Kirk's word is "his bond." The Tribune wrote that the display "reflects the hubris he shows from time to time." The Daily Herald warned Kirk that "he should not expect his appalling embellishment to go away because he changes the subject to Giannoulias' banking history." Perhaps the harshest words, however, came from the Sun-Times' Carol Marin. The veteran journalist compared Kirk's behavior to that of former Secretary of State Alexander Haig, whose "unbridled ego and opportunism" led him to declare, incorrectly, that he was "in control" of the White House following an assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan. Reporters: Get Free Redistricting Training

As lawmakers prepare to tackle a remap of the state's legislative districts once the 2010 Census data is released, the Community Media Workshop and several other local organizations want to ensure local reporters fully grasp this thorny issue.  That's why they're sponsoring a free redistricting workshop for journalists on June 17 and 18 featuring numerous experts on the topic.  The ultimate goal is to build "the capacity of journalists to engage in a detailed and thoughtful conversation with policymakers and stakeholders about Illinois redistricting."  If you're interested in applying, the deadline is May 31.  More information is available at the Illinois Press Association website.

Who You Callin' A Name-Caller?

On last night's 9 p.m. broadcast, Fox Chicago featured an interview with Illinois Minutemen Project Director Rosanna Pulido.  At one point in the discussion, anchor Jeff Goldblatt highlighted a press conference yesterday in which local religous leaders denounced Arizona's draconian new immigration law.  After watching a clip of Father Larry Dowling saying that the legislation "has its roots in white supremacist ideology," Pulido responded: "It's name-calling. What the left only knows how to do is name-call."  Watch it (full video here):

It's kind of amazing to hear Pulido decry "name-calling" considering that, in comments posted to the right-wing Free Republic website under the pseudonym "chicagolady," she called gays "fudge packers" and repeatedly referred to Barack Obama as "Osama."  And while we're on the topic of white supremacy, she once described Mexicans as the new "Klu Klux Klan with a tan."

Why this woman gets airtime on our local network stations is beyond me.

Mysterious ... (UPDATED)

From the WTTW email we just received describing this evening's lead segment on Chicago Tonight:

Carol Marin sits down with a State Representative who will make a major personal announcement.

UPDATE (7:10 p.m.): State Rep. Deb Mell (D-Chicago) was the mystery guest.  She appeared with her partner, Christin Parker, to announce their engagement and her intention to speak in support of gay marriage on the House floor tomorrow.  She plans to ask her fellow lawmakers, "Please give us our rights."  Added Parker, "We're not to be feared.  There's nothing scary about allowing us to have the same rights as everyone else."

UPDATE (4/28): Capitol Fax has posted video of Mell's announcement on the House floor:
