The Money Myth About Public School Teachers

The notion that teaching in a public school is a low-paying occupation is proving to be a situation of “you get what you pay for.”

This week, the Chicago Sun-Times looked at salary information for teachers statewide and found the average total salary (including benefits like pay for summer school and after-school activities) for an elementary school teacher was $61,140, while the average high school teacher made $69,366 in Illinois. The average annual teacher’s salary was $74,839 as of October 2008, according to the CPS website. Want to see what your child's teacher makes? Check out their online database.

CPS Officials Abruptly Walk Out Of Meeting With Avondale-Logandale Parents

While getting a tongue lashing from State Sen. Iris Martinez about their plan to move forward with the consolidation of Avondale Elementary and Logandale Middle School, Chicago Public School officials abruptly walked out of the planned meeting with parents and school staff.

Logan Square Residents Take To The Streets To Protest CPS Consolidation Plan

Parents, teachers, and concerned residents are taking to the streets of the Logan Square neghborhood today to voice their anger with the Chicago Public Schools' plan to consolidate Avondale Elementary and Logandale Middle School. They say the plan will do more harm than good to the children attending those schools.

CTU Dismayed With Process, Pick For Next CPS Head (VIDEO)

Any accord stemming out of what was in the end a consensus education bill in Springfield is rapidly diminishing in Chicago. Representatives from the Chicago Teachers Union said this afternoon they are dismayed with how Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel went about choosing the next chief executive of Chicago Public Schools and expressed concern with some of the educational policies the CEO pick, Jean-Claude Brizard, supports. Emanuel, said CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey, seems to be setting CTU up "as a straw man, to set himself up as a crusading reformer." Sharkey added the incoming mayor cannot "dictate" the terms of educational policy in Chicago.
