Heated Battle For President In Cicero Is Now Up To Voters (UPDATED)

A heated race in Cicero could come to an end today as constituents battled freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall to cast their vote for town president.

“The weather has made today challenging,” said candidate Joe Pontarelli, former director of the Cicero Senior Services Department. “We would like to get a large voter turnout so we can get some change happening in our town.”

Calumet City Residents Say Gun Control Was Key Decider In Vote (VIDEO)

For many voters in the south suburban areas of the 2nd Congressional District, Tuesday’s special election to replace former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was a chance to express their desire for “change”, despite admitting to having a guarded optimism over anyone who eventually wins the seat.

“I feel like new people do not have the connections, they do not owe anybody,” said Calumet City resident Karen Fields, who voted for former state Rep. Robin Kelly. “They have nothing to gain by not being themselves - they can come into office and make a change.”

Checking In With Ald. Beale & His Hopes For The 2nd District On Election Day

On a dreary day in an area that has seen more than its fair share of ethically-challenged elected officials, an expectedly low voter turnout was the story at many polling places Tuesday as residents came out to cast their ballots in the race to replace former Illinois 2nd Congressional District U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

Polling places remained mostly empty throughout the district during much of the morning, an outcome that can be attributed just as much to a high level of voter apathy than to the snowy weather.

Such was the scene at Bennett Elementary School on the far South Side, where congressional candidate and 9th Ward Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale went to cast his ballot this morning.

Halvorson, Steger Residents Blast Bloomberg SuperPAC Money On Election Day (VIDEO)

Freezing rain began to slick over the sidewalks this morning just as Democratic candidate for the 2nd congressional district Debbie Halvorson voted at the Steger Community Center.

Former congresswoman Halvorson is one of 18 candidates running in the special primary election today to replace Jesse Jackson Jr., who pled guilty last week to misusing campaign funds.

“The 2nd congressional district has been plagued for a long time with ethical problems, with corruption, and we have a chance to really close that chapter and start fresh,” Halvorson said just after casting her ballot.

Apathy, Lack Of Faith Plague 2nd Congressional District Voters

In the morning hours of today’s primary election for Illinois' 2nd Congressional District, a blizzard on the horizon and a lack of faith in elected officials has left many poll workers and voters with a dismal outlook for voter turnout.

An intense race for the Democratic nomination that started with 17 candidates has boiled down to three front-runners, former State Rep. Robin Kelly, former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson and Chicago Ald. Anthony Beale (9th), and comes to an end today.
