Walmart Workers Call For A Living Wage, Better Work Conditions (VIDEO)

When Larry Born’s privately-owned retail business closed its doors during the recession in 2009, he sought employment at Walmart. He said he didn’t know it at the time, but he walked into a “predatory employer” that pays “slave wages.” Born was one of nearly 100 people who protested outside Chicago’s Walmart Express store, at 570 West Monroe St., to demand better wages and improved working conditions for the employees of the world’s largest retailer.

Chicago Workers Protest Low Wages, Treatment of McDonald's Employees On Global Day Of Action (VIDEO)

Chicago fast food workers and advocates for a living wage protested outside a downtown McDonald’s Thursday morning, demanding that the company stop mistreating its workers.

Thursday’s protest coincided with similar demonstrations at McDonald's restaurants in more than 30 countries as part of the National Guestworker Alliance’s global anti-exploitation campaign against the fast food giant.

Tyree Johnson, who has worked at McDonald’s in Chicago for 21 years, said he has been “exploited” and “disrespected” at the hands of the company.

“I complained to my boss about a raise, and I told her I’ve been evicted, and she said, ‘So what? I don’t care,’” Johnson said outside the McDonald’s at 23 S. Clark St. “So I’m here to fight and stand up for $15 a hour and support guestworkers who have been exploited also.”

Pilsen Residents Continue Push For A Say In What's Next For Polluted Factory Sites

Environmental activists are pushing to stay involved during the remediation and redevelopment of polluted sites on Chicago’s Southwest Side.

Although members of the Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization (PERRO) called it a victory to have the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) commit to cleanup efforts in the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods, the group continues to campaign for community engagement in the area’s revitalization.

The grassroots organization provided project updates and discussed environmentally-friendly initiatives and redevelopment ideas at a public meeting Wednesday.

“We’ve had several really great successes in the last couple years, Fisk closed down, H. Kramer was forced to clean up their pollution, these kind of things don’t happen without community pressure,” said Jerry Mead-Lucero, organizer for PERRO. “Change requires community pressure, and that’s why it’s so important we keep informing the residents and keep the community involved so we can make good things happen.”

TIF Program Angers Bridgeport, McKinley Park Residents

Residents of Chicago's 11th Ward were outraged upon learning that $57.4 million in property tax money was sitting in their tax increment financing (TIF) districts' collective bank accounts at the end of 2011, according to data unveiled by the CivicLab.

One resident suggested at least one way that money could have been put to use at the CivicLab's TIF Illumination Project meeting Wednesday night.

Maureen Sullivan with Bridgeport Alliance said she has been pushing the city to renovate the Ramova Theater at 35th and Halsted streets for years, to no avail.

The city currently owns the property, which has been closed since 1986, Sullivan said.

“It could be a thousand-seat performance space and the largest economic generator on Halsted Street, and it's sitting there empty," Sullivan said in remarks after the meeting, held at the McKinley Park library. "And I'm so angry, because when I talk to the city, they dangle (TIF) in front of you, like 'we may be able to get you some TIF funds for this.'” Read more »

Taxpayers Protest TIF Funding Of DePaul's New Basketball Arena (VIDEO)

The allocation of $55 million of Chicago’s tax increment financing (TIF) dollars for the building of a new DePaul University basketball arena at McCormick Place is “unjust,” according to a group of approximately 20 protesters who took their message to the university’s student center Wednesday.

“A private university can fund their own stadium,” said Adenia Linker, 45, a member of the education advocacy group, Raise Your Hand, and participant in Wednesday’s protest. “I understand the need for tourism dollars and the need to bring people to the lake, but we also need the infrastructure of education for the next generation.”

Illinois Ranked A National Leader In Clean Technology Deployment

Illinois is “leading the charge” for clean technology deployment in the country, according to a new report from Clean Edge, a research and advisory firm dedicated to energy efficient and environmentally friendly industries, policies and applications.

The firm’s inaugural U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index report, released Tuesday, ranked Illinois’ clean-tech marketplace as 8th in the nation for strong policies that reduce the state’s environmental footprint.

“The clean-tech sector is the critical industry for economic leadership and economic development in the 21st century,” said Clint Wilder, senior editor of Clean Edge and co-author of the report. “If you want to plan for the future at all, it’s important to establish leadership and establish your state as one of the clean-tech hubs in the U.S., and I think Illinois has done a very good job of that.”
