Aldermen Take Testimony On Pollution Ordinance

A hearing about the Clean Power Ordinance, which would impose new limits on particulate matter and carbon dioxide emitted by Chicago's two coal-fired power plants, brought hundreds of supporters and opponents to City Hall today. Hard hat-wearing power plant employees, who said they were worried about losing their jobs if the bill is passed, packed the council's main chambers while green-clad environmental campaigners, who have long criticized how pollution from the Fisk and Crawford plants affects human health and contributes to climate change, periodically chanted outside as aldermen took testimony this morning.

There's been a lot of talk that the incoming Emanuel administration will put privatization of various city services on the table. And the Daley administration, in its waning days, is looking to contract out the city's incomplete recycling program.

Lame Duck Council Scheduled To Take Up Important Ordinances This Week

Voters in 14 Chicago wards will cast their ballots and complete (barring allegations of improprieties and protracted legal battles), the next City Council. But that group -- and Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel -- won't be inaugurated until May 16. In the meantime, the current group of aldermen, a number of them already lame ducks, are scheduled to consider at least three ordinances we've been tracking here at Progress Illinois just days after tomorrow's run-off election. Click through to get the details.
