Medicaid: Cuts Now, Some Revenue Soon? (UPDATED)

The General Assembly stayed in session until late Thursday evening to pass a bill that would lop off $1.6 billion from the federal-state Medicaid program that serves 2.7 million Illinois residents. But while state lawmakers worked overtime to enact Medicaid cuts, they just introduced a bill this afternoon that hikes the state cigarette tax and, combined with the cuts, would cover the state’s $2.7 billion in unfunded Medicaid liabilities.

Several Illinois hospitals that focus their care on low-income patients tentatively back an unfolding Medicaid plan by Gov. Pat Quinn, after previously blasting the governor’s attempts to cut $2.7 billion in yearly Medicaid spending.

Business Butts Heads With Cullerton On Corporate State Income Tax Transparency Bill

A bill currently making its way through the Illinois Senate that would require public-held companies to report how much they pay in state income taxes is being lauded by a local community group as being a first step toward creating a more equitable tax structure, while business leaders have decried the measure, alleging it could further perpetuate the state’s reputation of being a bad place to do business.
