African American Religious Leaders Join Forces To Call For Higher Minimum Wage (VIDEO)

African-American faith-based leaders from across Illinois called on state legislators to increase Illinois’ minimum wage to $10.65 an hour at a press conference in Chicago Wednesday.

The leaders urged their elected officials to support Senate Bill 68, which would gradually increase the minimum wage until it reaches $10.65 and go up with the cost of living each year thereafter.

Joel Miles (pictured), senior pastor of Greater Walters AME Zion Church, said raising the minimum wage could help curb the senseless violence that’s taken the lives of too many individuals in his community.

“We have seen individuals turn to illegal and violent activities simply because they are unable to pay their rent, to provide their children with basic food and clothing,” he said Wednesday at the Trinity United Church of Christ.

“No full-time worker in this state of Illinois should earn less than $17,000 a year.”

Report: Racial Wealth Gap Nearly Tripled Over Last 25 Years, Home Ownership A Factor

Derived from a long history of discrimination, a staggering opportunity gap has widened financial disparities between black and white Americans, condemning African Americans to less home equity, according to a new report by the Institute on Assets and Social Policy (IASP) at Brandeis University.

After studying 1,700 American families for 25 years, the report examines the major causes of America’s racial wealth gap. Researchers found that the total wealth gap between white and African American families had almost tripled during the study, increasing from $85,000 in 1984 to $236,500 in 2009.

Chicago Lawmakers Pass Groundbreaking Ordinance To Protect Employees From Wage Theft

On Thursday, the Chicago City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that will make the city a national leader in the protection of employee wages. Employers in the city will be held accountable if found guilty of wage theft, thanks to the new ordinance, and could have their business licenses revoked, making the city one of only two municipalities in the nation that has such a law on its books. San Francisco is the only other American city to have similar wage theft safeguards.

“This ordinance helps change the conversation about good business. To be pro-business also includes caring about how employees are treated,” said Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th), who worked with Arise Chicago to get the ordinance passed. “I think this marks an important step in leveling the playing field for the many ethical business owners in our city."

Hundreds Descend On The Magnificent Mile To Rally For A Higher Minimum Wage (VIDEO)

Hundreds of Chicagoans marched down the Magnificent Mile Thursday, chanting, carrying signs, and demanding a higher wage for downtown’s service industry and retail workers.

Part of the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago’s “Fight For 15” campaign to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, the protest started with a 4 p.m. rally at Cityfront Plaza. As protesters chanted “we can’t survive on $8.25,” minimum wage employees spoke of economic hardships and community leaders spoke in support of raising wages for downtown’s food and retail employees.

“I have a step-child to look after, medical bills I can’t afford and student loans I have to pay off, but I’m not making enough money,” said Robert Wilson Jr., 25, a seven-year employee of the McDonald’s on Navy Pier. Wilson makes $8.35 per hour.

“We work hard for little pay and we deserve way more than what we’re getting,” he said.
