Watchdog Praises Wells Fargo For Dropping 75 Percent of Prison Investments, Asks For More

Weeks after a watchdog group slammed the banking giant Wells Fargo for its financial ties to the private prison industry, that same group is praising the bank for backing off of some of those investments.

Citing information from the Securities Exchange Commission, The Public Accountability Initiative (PAI), a non-partisan corporate watchdog group said Wells Fargo divested nearly 75 percent of its holdings in the GEO Group, the nation’s second largest private prison company.

Southern Illinois State Senate Candidates Slam Quinn

Miles south of Springfield, much less Chicago, the 59th district state senate race at the southern tip of Illinois between incumbent Democrat Gary Forby (pictured) and Republican challenger Mark Minor is often a contest of who can best criticize Gov. Pat Quinn, the state’s Democratic governor who hails from the Windy City.

“Beating up on Chicago is a time-honored tradition in southern Illinois,” says John Jackson a political science professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois. “The Democrat is running against the governor as hard as the Republican is.”

Quinn is taking a beating for reasons that go beyond a general wariness of Chicago politicians.

Quinn Gets A Win On Prisons, But Litigation Drags On

Gov. Pat Quinn scored a big victory Friday in his plan to balance the state budget. Arbitrator Steve Biereg ruled that the state acted reasonably in the June ordering of the shut down of seven different corrections and juvenile justice facilities.

However, the legal clash between Quinn and the AFSCME Council 31 public employees union over the closings continues. The conflict will now stretch past the election and, quite possibly, the Illinois General Assembly’s fall veto session scheduled for late November.

How The Thomson Prison Sale Went Down

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat and assistant Senate majority leader, announced Tuesday that the Obama administration will purchase the unused Thomson prison from the state of Illinois for $165 million.

Durbin hailed the acquisition as an instance of collaboration between Gov. Pat Quinn and the U.S. Justice Department Federal Bureau of Prisons. “This historic action will lead to the creation of hundreds of construction jobs and over 1,000 permanent jobs at this facility,” Durbin said in a statement.

Cheri Bustos, the Democratic nominee in the 17th congressional district that includes the village of Thomson, said the sale was “great news because there should be no higher priority than putting people in our district back to work,” in an e-mailed statement.

While the agreement might indeed prove a boon to an economically troubled region, it emerged out of exasperation with U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Virginia), chairman of the House appropriations subcommittee that controls the Justice Department budget. Read more »

Watchdog Group Slams Wells Fargo For Ties To Private Prison Industry

The United States prison industry continues to shift towards private ownership of facilities, and the immigrant and minority populations in most prisons now disproportionately outnumber white inmates.

In light of these details, an economic advocacy group is pointing an accusatory finger at Wells Fargo for being a major financier of some of the largest private prison companies in the country.

Op-Ed: AFSCME Responds To 'Quinn Spin'

The following was written by Anders Lindall, spokesman for AFSCME Council 31, in response to the op-ed posted on Progress Illinois yesterday from Gov. Pat Quinn's office.

Sadly, there they go again. Governor Pat Quinn and his staff routinely twist reality, mislead the public and insult the men and women who do the real work of state government in their communities every day.

Endlessly repeating lies does not make them true. Yet the 1200 words of empty political talking points issued yesterday by a Quinn spokeswoman are riddled with repeated falsehoods and glaring omissions.
