Business Butts Heads With Cullerton On Corporate State Income Tax Transparency Bill

A bill currently making its way through the Illinois Senate that would require public-held companies to report how much they pay in state income taxes is being lauded by a local community group as being a first step toward creating a more equitable tax structure, while business leaders have decried the measure, alleging it could further perpetuate the state’s reputation of being a bad place to do business.

Anti-Family Policies Have Illinois Moms Facing Uphill Battle, Say Women's Rights Advocates

In light of Mother’s Day, some women's rights advocates say recent cuts to state-run programs and too many anti-family policies are damaging the economic security for Illinois mothers and their children. 

From Medicaid cuts to dwindling access to child care, single mothers across the state are disproportionately impacted, said Sharonda Glover, manager of communications for the Chicago Foundation for Women.

These various state cuts have a “domino effect” on mothers, she said.

Dwindling Resources For Low-Income Illinois Parents

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn wants lawmakers to financially rescue Illinois child care providers, one week after 40,000 state-subsidized providers were told the state ran out of money to pay them for the rest of the fiscal year. At stake is whether 85,000 low-income parents who work or attend school can continue to access child-care.

Advocacy Groups Give Roadmap To Opposing Medicaid Cuts

As we reported, many progressives oppose Gov. Pat Quinn’s proposed $2.7 billion in Medicaid cuts, which, along with public employee pension changes, is the most consequential aspect of the governor’s ambitious budget cutting plan. Today, the disability advocacy group Access Living and Housing Action Illinois hosted a Web conference that instructed advocates on how to fight against Quinn’s cuts over the next month – the General Assembly is expected to vote on a fiscal-year budget by May 31.
