Privacy advocates condemning the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and
Protection Act (CISPA) as the end of online confidentiality experienced
a triumph this week as the legislation will likely be shelved by the
U.S. Senate.
Participating organizations, which include members of the Internet Defense League such as Reddit and Wordpress, have asked their users to contact Congress this week to express their support for reform of the CFAA.
A
1986 law designed to reduce Internet hacking, the CFAA allows the
federal government to prosecute Internet users for various
computer-related offenses.
“The CFAA is punishing too much of our
behavior online and too much of our activity,” said Matt Wood, policy
director for Free Press Action Fund. The Free Press
is a member of the Internet Defense League (IDL). Approximately 30,000 websites participate regularly in the
organization’s Internet freedom campaigns.

Instead, the heavily tech and social media dependent campaign will be turned into a grassroots non-profit called Organizing for Action with the aim of moving forward the issues and policies that united his supporters in the first place.
"We have the power to do even more to change our politics and our country for the better," President Obama wrote to supporters in an email announcing the new organization. "With Organizing for Action, you'll have every resource you need to do it.
But it starts with you. This new organization is in your hands."
Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law yesterday legislation that bans employers
from requesting that workers provide their passwords to social
media sites such as Facebook.
A bill making it illegal for employers in Illinois to ask employees for their Facebook passwords is one step closer to becoming state law.
HB 3782 was approved by the Illinois Senate on Tuesday by a vote of 55-0. The proposed amendment to the Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act would make it illegal for employers to ask potential and current employees for their social media passwords.
“From a public policy standpoint, employers should not be allowed to look at those passwords,” said State Sen. Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago), a co-sponsor of the bill, in an interview with Progress Illinois. “That information is off limits.”
