What To Make Of The Chicago Murder Rate

The homicide rate is probably the top political story in Chicago so far this year, with an approximately 30 percent citywide increase in murders between 2011 and 2012 and a succession of new pronouncements from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy on how they are responding to the problem.

County Board Could Have Votes For Housing Voucher Protection

Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia (D-Chicago) introduced at a county board meeting today an amendment to the county’s human rights ordinance that would give legal recourse to people with federal housing vouchers that landlords discriminate against.

The amendment to the 1993 county law (PDF) has seven co-sponsors, meaning at least eight of the 17 commissioners, or one short of a majority, already support the measure, including board president Toni Preckwinkle (D-Chicago). Garcia anticipates the ordinance will pass through committee in two weeks, and then swiftly see a vote by the full board. Read more »

Transforming The Plan For Transformation

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Housing Authority announced Saturday a “Plan For Transformation 2.0,” in which they will “recalibrate” the Plan for Transformation, a huge undertaking launched in 2000 to relocate public housing residents to mixed-income housing units.
