On Monday, the country will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. To commemorate the civil rights leader's life and honor his legacy, Chicago progressives are organizing a few events this weekend that are worth attending.

The first, hosted by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, is a rally in support of comprehensive immigration reform. Around 1,000 members of the African-American, Latino, labor, and faith communities are expected to attend. Speakers include progressive U.S. Representatives Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky, and Danny Davis,  SEIU Illinois Council president Tom Balanoff, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The event begins at 1:30 pm at the First Baptist Congregational Church (1613 W. Washington Blvd), where King once preached.

On the following day, Gov. Pat Quinn will commemorate the holiday by visiting St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Hyde Park (5472 S. Kimbark).  He is planning to discuss the state's new $425 million Urban Weatherization Initiative, which will fund programs that train and employ individuals to perform traditional weatherization tasks. Hosted by the Illinois Indiana Regional Organizing Network, elected officials will also be asked to make public commitments about housing, transportation, and economic and environmental justice issues. Schakowsky, Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th Ward), and State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago) have confirmed that they will attend. The proceedings start at 2:30 pm.

And for those with the day off on Monday, you can find opportunities to volunteer through the MLK Day of Service here.
