Yesterday, GOP Reps. Mark Kirk and Judy Biggert held a health care meeting at the Naperville Chamber of Commerce. Journalists and some members of the public were allowed inside, but video and audio equipment was prohibited. So the TV reporters stationed outside the event had little to offer, other than some clips from a press conference held earlier in the day. Thinking on their feet, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out a spokesperson, Kathleen Strand, to respond to the "alternative" health care plan being pushed by Kirk, saying "it does not go far enough to fix the broken health care system that he and George W. Bush helped create." Watch this clip from WGN's afternoon broadcast:
We'll have more on Kirk and Biggert's meeting in our health care round-up later today. In the meantime, be sure to read this Daily Kos post from a diarist who made it inside the event.

That Daily Kos post is hilarious.
Mark Kirk went from cutting grass to being an afficionado on how to kill health care reform. Who knew?
And it's clear why they didn't want cameras inside their event...
There were great questions from the crowd. Nonanswers, vague answers, repeated comments from above....but the questions were good.
A doctor explained that Medicare paperwork is much much much less than private insurance paperwork.
Several people debunked mistakes or lies that were in Judy and Mark's presentation. Someone asked why they spent so much time talking about England when nobody is talking about providing anything like health care in England here.
A Brit explained that he'd operated businesses in the UK, Canada and America, and he doesn't see why as a small businessman he has to provide insurance for any of his employees. It's costing him his American dream. He'd rather have the government do something and he'll pay same as everybody into a wider pool with no for-profit insurance in the way.
Ooops! Look at the time! We'd better get going. We're busy don't ya know.

As if Kirk would vote for his own bill if it was accepted without amendments by the Democrats. No chance, in this political environment. What a hypocrite.

Kirk falsely touts his third pillar of "reform" as trust busting. He calls for the "breakup of local state insurance monopolies". This is yet another example of how Kirk lies to make his idea sound like it will be good for people when it will only be good for large, corporate interests. What this means is that they want to create fully de-regulated national insurance monopolies. Right now insurers are regulated by the states. Each state has an insurance regulator. In Illinois we have a pretty good agency that does that., the Illinois Department of Insurance. You can report bad insurer behavior to them. For example, if your insurer cancels you without the property notice, you can report it. They will help you. Kirk and Biggert do not want you to have that place to call. They do not want you to have that protection. There is no federal department of insurance and their bill does not propose one. There are no federal insurance rules and their bill does not propose any. They want you to be on your own against huge national insurance monopolies. That is reform to Kirk and Biggert. It's pretty disgusting that the reporter fails to mention any of that in her report. It used to be considered part of a journalist's job to do some research and ask tough questions. Now, reporters are nothing more than human mic stands. It's a shame that the DSCC spokesperson was not knowledgeable enough to point that out. I'd love to see Democrats find experts and use them rather playing catchup using the same frames as used by the likes of the liars Kirk and Biggert.
