Last month, we posted an American News Project (ANP) video documenting the celebration among mortgage banking lobbyists over the defeat of Sen. Dick Durbin's mortgage modification bill, which sought to stem the rise in foreclosures. Below is a similar ANP piece released this week. Instead of mortgage bankers, this short documentary features lobbyists for the online payday lending industry. And instead of Durbin's mortgage bill, these interests are in D.C. to fight the senator's measure capping consumer credit transactions at 36 percent APR. The video is also useful because it tells the story of a struggling family that, out of desperation, fell prey to the payday lending trap. As the wife says at the end, "If payday loans didn't exist then we would have found other means, whether it was through Department of Social Services or family friends. Payday loans did not help us at all." Watch it:
