The folks over at the Heartland Alliance are reporting back that further entry into the state capitol has been barred after protestors flooded the building to protest looming social service cuts. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights estimates that 6,000 people have shown up in Springfield today. Here's a pic they snapped of the rotunda floor:

In March, I attended a townhall sponsored by my Sate Rep and State Senator. They asked how folks felt about tax hikes to keep state services running. Most folks in the meeting said they'd be willing to accept tax hikes if they knew where the money was going and that it was going into needed services.
Here's my post from that event.
Despite that many are willing to accept a tax hike for good reason, so many of our state leaders are still stuck on the notion that they have to cling to fiscal conservatism, not because it's worked so well in the past, or that it's working for us now, but because they are afraid of what will happen to them politically if they don't. The corporate fake grassroots tea parties create a stir that taxes are bad and people who don't bother to look into the issues hear taxes and have that automatic reflex that Reagan created. I hate to see it start, but maybe a dose of up close and personal Reaganism is going to have to happen before people learn. However, people who are paying attention realize that some tax hikes are necessary. They showed it in that townhall in March.

Cuts have already begun. It is a done deal. As of 07/01ish, social services in So. IL disappear to non-existent levels. Facilities close. People have their pink slips. So. IL social services/programs are sacrificed. Rather completely, too.
