There seems to be a bit of confusion over how Mike Quigley's successor on the Cook County Board will be selected, assuming he wins the 5th Congressional District general election on April 7 (a pretty safe assumption). The way it works is the Democratic committeemen in the wards that overlap with Quigley's 10th District will meet sometime shortly after his election to choose the next commissioner.  As the Tribune reported today, Comm. Forrest Claypool is expressing hope that they will tap someone in the Quigley mold:

“I’m usually skeptical when the committeemen are making the pick, but let’s keep our fingers crossed,” he said. “I hope those who will be making this selection will keep the public’s mandate in mind and send someone here who stands for the same values that Mike Quigley did.”

So who are the committeemen in question?  Here's the list, along with their estimated weighted vote. Each committeeman's weighted votes correspond with the votes cast for Quigley during the previous general election (in this case, 2006)*:

44th Ward: Tom Tunney (12,923)
48th Ward: Carol Ronen (12,545)
46th Ward: Tom Sharpe (12,013)
43rd Ward: Michele Smith (10,786)
40th Ward: Pat O'Connor (5,527)
39th Ward: Randy Barnette (3,629)
50th Ward: Ira Silverstein (2,384)
49th Ward: David Fagus (1,463)
32nd Ward: John Fritchey (1,208)
45th Ward: Patrick Levar (217)
41st Ward: Mary O'Connor (210)

As for who they will choose, that's anybody's guess at this point.  There are rumors floating around the Ald. Pat O'Connor is thinking about making a move over to the County Board and, if that's the case, he's somewhat well-positioned to try to make that happen.

If you live in the 10th District, it's never too early to give these committeemen a call and make your thoughts known on the upcoming replacement process.

Thanks to Paul Smith of Everyblock for providing the data.

*CORRECTION: This post originally stated that the weighted votes are determined by population.  In fact, they correspond with the votes received by Quigley in the 2006 election. It also originally listed Joe Moore as the 49th Ward committeeman.
