WTTW Asserts Employee Free Choice Act Would "Replace Secret Ballot"

Last night, WTTW's Chicago Tonight hosted a segment on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).  Here's how anchor Eddie Arruza introduced it:

Last night, WTTW's Chicago Tonight hosted a segment on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).  Here's how anchor Eddie Arruza introduced it:

As you can see, the graphic asserts that EFCA would "replace" secret ballot union elections with a majority sign-up system (also known as "card-check).  This is exactly how opponents of the legislation want it described.  But as Gannon later noted, both forms of unionization are currently allowed under federal labor law and that wouldn't change under EFCA.  What the bill would do is allow the workers -- rather than the employer -- to choose the method.

And is EFCA's aim to simply "make union organizing easier," as Arruza puts it? This framing makes it sound like the proponents are just looking for added convenience.  In fact, the legislation's aim is to curb employers' increasing tendency to intimidate and fire workers that attempt to organize. Quite simply: If so many employers didn't abuse their control of the unionization process in order to halt organizing drives -- and face negligible penalties as a result -- this bill wouldn't be necessary.
