Various organizations and elected officials are throwing their weight behind candidates in the race to replace Rep. Mark Kirk in the 10th Congressional District. That includes former governor Jim Edgar, who formally endorsed State Rep. Beth Coulson (R-Glenview) in the crowded Republican primary.

On the other side of the aisle, the New Trier Township Democrats voted on Sunday to endorse Dan Seals. Here's a statement from committeeman Bill Crowley:

“Over the last few years, Dan Seals has immersed himself in the diversity and the needs of the 10th district and has a deep familiarity with the federal issues of the day,” Bill Crowley, New Trier Township Committeeman, stated.  “Dan has built strong name recognition and uniformly high regard throughout the district. This, together with his strong core values and independent mindset, will make Dan an excellent representative of the 10th District.”

His primary opponent, State Rep. Julie Hamos (D-Willmette), locked up the support of Citizen Action/Illinois, which specifically cited her work creating the Consumer Guide to Health Care:

"Julie's fresh ideas and innovative approach to problem solving make her one of the best legislators in Illinois," said Lynda DeLaforgue, co-director, Citizen Action/Illinois. "The 10th District can count on Julie Hamos to be an independent, thoughtful Congresswoman who will always stand up for what's right."

Speaking of Hamos, here's a video of remarks she gave to the Chicago Clean Energy Alliance about her environmental stewardship in Springfield:

This was a great endorsement for Seals! Also, Hoffman was endorsed by the New Trier Dems after receiving almost 80 percent. I decided I'm voting for both of these candidates after they opposed the troop surge in Afghanistan. Julie Hamos and Alexi Giannoulias both supported President Obama's plan. I was pleased to see that both Seals and Hoffman have the courage to oppose President Obama and hope they both win their primaries.

Hoffman appears to have his own surge, both in name recognition and in message. Last weekend, over 100 people showed up at a fundraiser in a private home in Highland Park to hear what he had to say. The objective for the Democratic Party is to retain Obama's senate seat. Both Alexi Giannoulias and Cheryle Jackson are very vulnerable to attacks by the GOP. In contrast, David Hoffman's five years of public service in Illinois as an Assistant U.S. Attorney under Patrick Fitzgerald, and also as Inspector General of Chicago have demonstrated a clean impeccable record, as well as his independence and ability to "walk the talk".

His experience as a successful investigator and prosecutor is a plus for defeating any GOP candidate in the General Election.
