This morning, Gov. Pat Quinn's reelection bid got the support of Local 881 of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW).  Incidentally, Quinn himself was a UFCW member in his younger days. The campaign released the following video shot at the event:

Meanwhile, a new ad from GOP candidate Andy McKenna includes a very misleading element.  At one point in the spot, the words "Quinn Hides The Truth" appear on the screen beside this notation: "Chicago Tribune, 11/18/09."  Below is a screengrab:

Those viewing the ad would likely assume that the Tribune, in some form or another, had accused Quinn of "hiding the truth" on that day.  In fact, the paper did no such thing, as Tribune reporter Rick Pearson made clear today:

On the date cited in the McKenna TV ad, the Tribune reported in its Clout Street blog about a debate held at the Union League Club of Chicago between Quinn and one of his Democratic rivals, Comptroller Dan Hynes. The McKenna campaign contends that its use of the term “Quinn hides truth” is a summary of the report, even though those words never appeared. [...]

It’s not the first time that a Republican statewide candidate for governor in Illinois has resorted to the use of misleading newspaper attributions. In his failed 2006 race for the GOP nomination for governor, businessman James D. Oberweis used four fake headlines from real newspapers across the state in his TV advertising.

The Quinn campaign also released the following statement:

Today, former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna launched an ad that claimed Governor Pat Quinn is attempting to hide the state government’s deficit from taxpayers, citing a Chicago Tribune “headline” that was completely fabricated by the McKenna campaign.

It is unfortunate that Chairman McKenna believes the only way to win Republican votes is to misrepresent the facts about Governor Quinn’s honest and responsible handling of the state budget crisis.

Finally, in his SouthtownStar column today, Rich Miller notes that Democratic challenger Dan Hynes "stopped running network TV ads on Nov. 11 and went dark on cable last week."  Miller wonders about Hynes' campaign strategy going forward, stating, "I'm not quite ready to pronounce Hynes' campaign officially dead, although everybody would have to admit that he does face some very, very difficult odds."

Full Disclosure: The SEIU Illinois State Council, which sponsors this website, has endorsed Pat Quinn in the Democratic primary for governor.
