The Tribune published this update in the past hour:

None of the five candidates seeking to succeed former Congressman Rahm Emanuel could muster a majority of support at a Democratic slating meeting today. That means the March 3 primary will be an open one with no party endorsed candidate. State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) came closest, but could not quite reach the 50 percent (plus one) benchmark.

This isn't a huge surprise, but it's good news for candidates like Quigley, Feigenholtz, and Geoghegan.

My question is: now that he's failed to gain the county party's endorsement, will Ald. Pat O'Connor actually run?

UPDATE (3:42 pm): O'Connor tells the Sun-Times that he's staying in the race (and we also learn that Ald. Gene Schulter is out):

State Rep. John Fritchey came far closer than O'Connor, getting 61,529 of the 62,884 weighted votes it would have taken to get the endorsement.

Among others, Fritchey won the support of Ald. Richard Mell (33rd); Ald. William J.P. Banks (36th); and Ald. Gene Schulter (47th), who was a candidate himself until recently.

O'Connor said after the vote he is still in the race.

O'Connor had a mere 22,901 votes.

UPDATE II (12/11, 1:26 pm): In their full article today, the Sun-Times reports that O'Connor told the committeemen that those would voted for an "open primary" would be "shirking their responsibility."  What a joke.  Newly-elected 43rd Ward committewoman Michele Smith set him straight, saying that in supporting an open primary they would be "embracing our responsibilities to build involvement and to revitalize this party."  Good for her.
